Rural Housing and Livelihood Programme for Marginalised,
Indigenous Groups – In Partnership with DESWOS

In partnership with DESWOS, CTRD commenced implementation of the three year Rural Housing and Livelihood Programme for Marginalised and Indigenous Groups in April 2009, working in tribal communities in the Gudalur block of the Nilgiri District in the state of Tamil Nadu.

To reduce the vulnerability of these poor families, powerful, focused interventions are made to break the cycle of poverty. Our project focuses on tribal community development through sustainable initiatives, utilizing wherever possible the existing indigenous knowledge of the tribal people.

Each year three tribal villages within the project area are selected, surveyed and assessed for their developmental needs. Based on the results of the assessments the following comprehensive training projects are undertaken and delivered to the selected villages:
    • Building and Construction Training
Training includes instruction on topics such as brick making techniques; machine operation; curing and protection of materials etc, for the construction of:
      • Traditional Tribal Houses.
      • Traditional Tribal Community Hall / Child Care Centre.

    • Masonry and Carpentry Training
Training is intended for local youths, both male and female.
Examples of masonry training include skills such as measurement taking and basic planning; use and maintenance of masonry tools; digging and laying of foundations; cement/mud packing and brick laying; plastering and flooring, and ventilation.

Examples of carpentry training include skills such as wood selection; usage and maintenance of tools; measurement taking; door, window, frame and roof construction.
